The uninterruptible power source protects the LED light(s) against blackouts, brownouts, and power surges. The uninterruptible power supply designed for the SMS LED fixture contains a primary digital driver and a redundant digital driver and sensor to monitor the primary supply source to provide back-up power until a re-start of the AC power system can be initiated.
This "always-on LED" is designed to deliver an uninterruptible power supply in a LED lighting device.
How can LED lighting be protected against power failures? Power sources are interrupted by unplanned catastrophic events including: weather (hurricanes, tornados, and floods), earthquakes, fires, terrorist attacks, and so on. HIDs have a warm-up time of two to four minutes and a re-strike time of 10 to 15 minutes. Even the shortest power delay necessitates a cooling off period in order for the lamp to be restarted. In this regard, HIDs are not recommended as the only light source in high pedestrian traffic areas.
When power fails as a result of a blackout, severe brownout or overvoltage, the digital driver immediately switches to the emergency mode, operating the LEDs at a reduced lumen output for a minimum of 90 minutes. When power is restored, the emergency digital driver automatically returns to the charging mode. The LED emergency backup provides 20W/2,560 (equal to a 100W MH fixture) of output for a 90 minute period upon power loss. This solution is suited for parking lots, office buildings, K-12 schools, correctional facilities, etc.
